Section 8 - MEDICATION GUIDELINES
ANTIHISTAMINES
Diphenhydramine (BENADRYL) / Antihistamine
DESCRIPTION
- Inhibits the release of histamine, thereby reducing brocho-constriction and vasodilatation.
INDICATIONS
- Allergic reaction. Dystonic reactions to antiphychotics.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
- Anaphylactic Shock
PRECAUTIONS
- May induce hypotension, headache, Tachycardia, sedation, drowsiness, and /or disturbed coordination.
- Use with caution in patients with asthma and other lower respiratory diseases due to the potential for dyspnea.
DOSAGE
- Adult: 1 mg/ kg up to 50 mg IVP AND refer to the appropriate PRACTICE PARAMETER for specific dosages.
- For PO administration:
- 1 mg/kg. Currently supplied in 12.5mg/5ml.
- For PO administration:
- Pediatrics: Refer to Handtevy System for specific dosages
- 1 mg/kg up to 50 mg IVP
- 1mg/kg for PO (12.5mg/5mL)
